Hugh's Chicken Out campaign takes an interesting turn.

Having seen Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's TV shows about how badly chicken are reared we've become supporters of the Chicken Out campaign. The reason for us is very simple; chickens should be able to walk and shouldn't have to get chemical burns on ther feet/legs because they're sitting in their own feces. They should also get more than 30minutes rest from eating per 24 hours.
Anyway, I got a newsletter from Hugh Hairy this morning and while he's happy for the progress (30-50% more "proper chicken" depending on whose figures you look at), he's also disappointed that Tesco hasn't done much about the whole thing. So Hugh has cunningly made sure he's a Tesco shareholder. This means that he can put forward a resolution for the Annual General Meeting. Clever! The resolution is simply asking for that the animals should be treated according to the Tesco's animal welfare standard. Which include
  • Freedom from Hunger and Thirst

  • Freedom from Discomfort

  • Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease

  • Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour

  • Freedom from Fear and Distress.

You can read the full resolution on the site. Hugh is then asking to be allowed to vote for you, if you're a Tesco shareholder (proxy voting that is). Hugh is also providing means for people who aren't Tesco shareholders to easily become Tesco shareholders.
Very clever!
Go Hugh and the chickens!!
